"This piece is my interpretation of a prickly pear cactus and its vibrant bloom, created in my sketchbook using oil pastels. I wanted to use a medium that would allow me to push the colors beyond realism, focusing on the strong, warm light of the desert against the deep, vivid greens of the pads. The rich texture achieved with the oil pastels was essential to capturing the dynamic and highly saturated beauty of this classic Sonoran plant." -Daniel Griffin
